About Me

I'm Alex Nunez-Carrasquillo, a Senior majoring in Computer Science and Minoring in Mathematics at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Originally from Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, I spend my free time biking around the Border-to-Border trail, kayaking down the Huron River, building in Cities Skylines, tending to my houseplants, or growing crops in Stardew Valley. I visit my home occasionally, where I soak in the sea salt on the beach and visit my family. However, my true passion has always been computers, and anything related to them - from scripting in LUA on Roblox as a child, to pursuing a degree in Computer Science as an adult, I hope to one day apply my passion to help make people's quality of life better. My skills, experience, and passion would make me a perfect fit for your team!

Client-Side Dynamic Clone of Instagram | EECS485: Implemented a full-stack, client-side dynamic clone of Instagram using Python, React, and SQLite. Users are able to post comments, create accounts, upload photos and follow other users via AJAX calls to a REST API implemented in React. As part of the project, I deployed the web page on AWS. Skills developed include:

Scalable Search Engine | EECS485: Built a scalable search engine by creating an inverted index of scraped web pages using MapReduce, performing text and link analysis, and returning the results via a REST API. Users can type in a query and select a PageRank weight, with results returned in ranked order. Skills developed include:
MapReduce processing of scraped web pages

Multithreaded Networked File Server | EECS482: Designed a multithreaded, networked file server from scratch. Users communicated with the file server via ports and sockets, sending CREATE, DELETE, WRITE, and READ requests to the server, and requests were handled using the Boost Threading and Synchronization libraries. The project had a focus on file systems at a lower level (with files and directories represented as inodes and blocks) but can be adapted to a higher level file system. Skills developed include:
Lower level network communication via ports and sockets
Substantial multithreaded programming with fine-grained locking
Knowledge of how Operating Systems store files and data

Personal Webpage | SU2024: Built a personal resume webpage using React and NextJS. Skills developed include:

Deploying on AWS and registering a domain
Vehicle Routing & Rideshare Application | SU2024 & FA2024: An open-source platform for microtransit agencies to deliver service. Agencies can set up services via a web application written in ReactJS which allows them to specify services (with ranges and time slots), vehicles, and service locations. Also allows for real-time driver tracking and ride monitoring. Furthermore, includes iOS apps written in Swift that allows drivers to service requests and request directions (using Google Maps), and allows passengers to book rides and interact with a chatbot for frequently-asked questions (using Gemini API). Lastly, the backend (Flask with Python) performs vehicle assignment using Google's Route Optimization API, and stores service usage statistics, coordinating ride requests across all three frontends. Started SU24 and finished as an MDE project in EECS 441. Github
